Area Info - Weather

Weather
The weather in the 1000 Islands is variable due to its geography and proximity to Lake Ontario. Hot summer days are common through out the summer months and cool evenings can be expected from the lake effect of the water. This makes the area ideal for kayaking.

We find that weather is the one dynamic that makes these trips so unique. Wind, Rain or shine we are prepared for any challenge the day may bring.

It truly is the weather that makes kayaking explorations so rewarding
. We find that the islands are much more enjoyable in "less desirable" weather.

The beauty, sites and sounds are all enhanced when the localized weather ads flavour and ambiance to the day ahead.

Wind
During windy days, the islands can provide unique shelter from the wind. We use an Island hopping technique to minimize any exposure on windy days. We use the lea side of islands to shelter us from the winds and if the wind is right we use it to our advantage to move us along. Our routes are planned daily to best suit the weather and the ambitions of the group that day.

Rain

Rain in the 1000 Islands brings out the true beauty of this area. Precipitation creates a mysterious elegance of sites generally unseen in these islands. Mist and light fog bring a sense of tranquil isolation and patience that only such a unique landscape can provide.

Thunderstorms are infrequent in the 1000 Islands, however, when they do occur, they can build very rapidly and can be quite a spectacular experience. We do not paddle if severe thunderstorms are forecast for the day. However thunderstorms may arrive during a trip without warning. We are prepared to deal with them with your safety in mind. We will provide excellent shelter from the storm to sit back and enjoy this inspiring beauty rarely seen in the area.

Shine
Hot sunny days are quite common in the 1000 Islands. When on the water it is sometimes difficult to measure the suns effect on us. We provide you with sunscreen and lots of water everyday out kayaking. Also the warming St. Lawrence waters provide excellent swimming on many of the islands we visit.

Spring and Fall
The spring and fall seasons provide the ideal climates for kayaking. The weather is generally cooler and more stable making these the perfect seasons to paddle in as well. In the shoulder seasons the towns around the 1000 Islands are less crowded and generally less expensive. The fall offers possibly the most scenic time of year to be in the islands up close by kayak. The fall colours are truly inspiring! The spring time offers the energetic comfort that summer is once again just around the corner. We highly recommend kayaking tours in the spring and fall.

We Provide

-Waterproof/Windproof Jackets for every guest
-12 person tarp for excellent shelter from rain or sun
-Sunscreen and Bug Spray
-Plenty of water
-Weather policies to promote safe travel in the islands

Weather Cancellation

Our guides main concern is your safety. We will not run a trip in weather that is too much. We monitor 3 weather channels before each trip to ensure a good understanding of the weather ahead. We have policies in place to determine if the weather is to be deemed unsafe. If we feel that the weather is too much for a particular group we will cancel. If we cancel due to weather then the 1000 Islands Kayaking Company will issue a full refund or credit towards another trip.
